The Language of Mental Health and Stigma

Many mental illnesses are used in this way, to insult. Have you never heard or said something like:

‘Why do you look so depressed, have you forgotten how to smile?’

‘Don’t have a panic attack, he’s just a boy’

‘I need my room to be clean, I’m so OCD’

‘Are you deluded? She’s not cute!’

‘Have some more, are you anorexic?’

Put yourself in the shoes of someone facing one of these issues and hear that. Wouldn’t you feel so disrespected, as if someone was belittling you and minimising the struggles you face every day?
